Q : How do civil surgeons determine drug abuse or addictions?

Using the CDC guidelines, civil surgeons review the applicant’s medical history during the medical exam and ask questions considered necessary to determine whether there is any current or past non-medical use of any drugs or other psychoactive substances (other than strictly experimental). There is no waiver available for this condition for most adjustment of status applicants.   However, applicants may undergo reexamination at a later date.  If, upon reexamination, the civil surgeon certifies that the individual is in remission, the ground of inadmissibility no longer applies.
