I write to oppose any use of adaptive technologies, like textured surfaces and
audible stop signals, to "aid" the disableds (the blind) in travel without first
improving the level of education available for the disabled. I feel univeral
education of the disabled in standard methods of travel, such as the use of a
cane, will obviate the "need" for such technologies. Frankly, not focusing on
the needs of the disabled with regard to education will disable travel by people
with special needs far more than these technologies might enable it.
