Review Process

Materials are identified for inclusion in ERIC through an internal review process. Publishers and education organizations may also self-refer via email (see Request Publication Indexing). All materials selected for inclusion in ERIC must be relevant to education and consistent with the ERIC Selection Policy Download ERIC Selection Policy. In addition, specific procedures are in place for three categories of materials.

For journals, ERIC:

  1. Reviews a title, considering information such as peer-review status, indexing, percentage of articles directly related to the field of education, and related content area.
  2. Determines if a journal may be indexed comprehensively (all articles within all issues) or selectively (each article reviewed for inclusion, with relevant articles selected).
  3. Signs an Agreement to Index Journals Download ERIC Agreement to Index Journals with the publisher.
  4. Receives or accesses an electronic file and indexes issues as they become available. Full Text display in ERIC is an option; however, an Addendum must be requested.

For books, ERIC:

  1. Reviews publishers of education-related books.
  2. Signs an Agreement to Index Books Download ERIC Agreement to Index Books with the publisher.
  3. Receives or accesses an electronic file and reviews book titles that the publisher submits.
  4. Indexes titles that meet the selection criteria.
  5. Reviews additional titles on an ongoing basis.

For grey literature, ERIC:

  1. Reviews information about the sponsoring organization, considering type and description of typical publications, as well as content area and background, such as a prior relationship with ERIC.
  2. Signs an Agreement for Education Materials Download Sample Agreement for Education Materials with the organization to index its materials and, as an option, to display full text in ERIC.
  3. Reviews and includes individual items as they meet the selection criteria.
