FedBizOpps Notice: Revised Guidelines Ceilings for Protective ClothingOn August 14, 2008, Federal Prison Industries’ (FPI) Board of Directors (the Board) revised FPI’s authorized sales ceilings for protective clothing from $61.8m to a maximum of $163.8m.
The Board authorized the increase in the ceiling due to a change in the material requirements, for outer vest covers, for the DoD. The DoD Commands that procure the outer vest covers from FPI have passed down varying purchasing requirements. In some instances the DoD is requiring FPI to provide the ballistics armor along with the vests and in other orders the DoD will procure the outer vest covers without the ballistics. FPI will procure the ballistics armor from private sector sources. This change in material requirements significantly increases the selling price per unit. In order to meet the DoD’s requirement FPI needed to implement an increase to the ceiling for protective clothing. This action will not have an adverse impact on the private sector as the number of outer vest covers produced by FPI is not expected to change.
