This CD-ROM contains data and documentation files for the NAEP 2007 mathematics assessments for use in the analysis of NAEP data by secondary researchers. The national and state mathematics assessments were conducted at grades 4 and 8. The grade 4 data are available on a separate CD-ROM (see NCES 2008491). A Data Companion is provided in electronic portable document format (PDF). This document contains information on the contents and use of the data files as well as the assessment design and its implications for analysis. NAEP datasets from 2002 onward require a Tool Kit with the updated NAEPEX. Your organization must apply for and be granted a restricted-use data license in order to obtain these data.

NCES 200801 2008 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:08) Field Test Methodology Report
This report describes the methodology and findings of the NPSAS:08 field test, which took place in the 2006-07 school year. The NPSAS:08 field test was used to plan, implement, and evaluate methodological procedures, instruments, and systems proposed for use in the full-scale study scheduled for the 2007-08 school year.

NCES 2008053 Dropout and Completion Rates in the United States: 2006
This report builds upon a series of National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reports on high school dropout and completion rates that began in 1988. It presents estimates of rates for 2006 and provides data about trends in dropout and completion rates over the last three decades (1972-2006), including characteristics of dropouts and completers in these years. Report highlights include: The averaged freshman graduation rate (AFGR), which provides an estimate of the percentage of public high school students who graduate with a regular diploma 4 years after starting 9th grade, was 74.7 percent for the class of 2005. Students living in low-income families were approximately four times more likely to drop out of high school between 2005 and 2006 than were students living in high-income families. In October 2006, approximately 3.5 million civilian noninstitutionalized 16- through 24-year-olds were not enrolled in high school and had not earned a high school diploma or alternative credential.

NCES 2008342 Documentation for the NCES Common Core of Data Pilot Teacher Compensation Survey (TCS), Restricted-Use Data File, School Year 2005–06
This restricted-Use Data File contains teacher level data from the Pilot Teacher Compensation Survey, School Year 2005-06. This is a research and development effort to collect individual salary and demographic data on public school teachers. Seven states participated in this effort: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Missouri, and Oklahoma. Data include base salary, total salary, highest degree earned, years of teaching experience, NCES school and agency IDs, race gender and age data.

NCES 2008338 Education and Certification Qualifications of Departmentalized Public High-School Level Teachers of Core Subjects: Evidence from the 2003-04 Schools and Staffing Survey
This report examines the percentage of public school teachers who held an in-field postsecondary major, in-field certification, or both, in a selection of high-school level main assignment fields. Teachers of these subjects were considered to be in-field majors if they held a major that they had earned at the bachelor's degree level or higher in the subject(s) that they taught.

This Special Supplement to The Condition of Education 2008 provides a descriptive profile of community colleges in the United States, examines the characteristics of students who entered community college directly from high school, and looks at rates of postsecondary persistence and attainment among community college students in general. It also compares the characteristics of these institutions and of the students who enroll in them with those of public and private 4-year colleges and universities.

NCES 2008483 NAEP High School Transcript Study 2005 Restricted-Use Data File
This CD-ROM contains data from the NAEP 2005 High School Transcript Study (HSTS), which was conducted in conjunction with the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). An Electronic Code Book (ECB); restricted-use data on high school courses; student and school demographics; and technical information for using, analyzing and interpreting the data, are included on the CD-ROM. This data file and ECB will be most useful for secondary researchers interested in high school course offerings, student course-taking patterns, and the relationship of these variables to student achievement, as measured by the NAEP 2005 Mathematics and Science assessments.

NCES 2008051 Parents’ Reports of the School Readiness of Young Children from the National Household Education Surveys Program of 2007
This descriptive report presents initial findings on the school readiness of young children, as reported by their parents, from the School Readiness Survey (PFI) of the 2007 National Household Education Surveys Program (NHES). It also incorporates basic demographic information about the population of children ages 3 to 6 who have not yet entered kindergarten, their parents'/guardians' characteristics, and the characteristics of the households in which they live. Topics covered include the participation of young children in preschool or other types of center-based care or education arrangements; parental plans for kindergarten enrollment and parents' beliefs about what they think they should do to prepare their children for school; children’s developmental accomplishments and difficulties, including emerging literacy and numeracy skills; family activities with children in and outside of the home; and children’s television-viewing habits.

NCES 2008050 Parent and Family Involvement in Education, 2006-07 School Year, From the National Household Education Surveys Program of 2007
This descriptive report presents initial findings on parents’ and families’ involvement in their children’s education from the Parent and Family Involvement in Education Survey (PFI) of the 2007 National Household Education Surveys Program (NHES). It also incorporates basic demographic information about the population of students in kindergarten through 12th grade, their parents'/guardians' characteristics, and the characteristics of the households in which they live. Topics covered include parent reports of their involvement in activities at school, their involvement with homework, school communication practices, schools' provision of information on select topics, parent satisfaction with various school characteristics, expectations for their children's educational attainment, and family plans to help pay for postsecondary education.

NCES 2008174 Descriptive Summary of 2003-04 Beginning Postsecondary Students: Three Years Later
Using data from the 2004/06 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:04/06), this report provides a description of the characteristics and enrollment patterns of a nationally representative sample of students who began postsecondary education for the first time during the 2003-04 academic year. The report describes the background, academic preparation, and experience of these beginning students over 3 academic years, from July 2003 to June 2006, and provides information about their rates of persistence, program completion, transfer, and attrition. The focus is on differences among students beginning at either 4-year, 2-year, or less-than-2-year institutions. Some highlights: Most of the first-time students who began at 4-year institutions in 2003-04 were age 19 or younger (85 percent) compared to 54 percent of students who began at 2-year institutions and 32 percent who began at less-than-2-year institutions. Among those under age 24 who began at a 4-year institution, nearly all (94 percent) had taken algebra II or higher mathematics courses in high school, and about one-fourth had taken calculus. Of students who began at a 4-year institution, about one-half had a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher, and about one-fourth had earned credit for courses taken at a college while still in high school. Eighteen percent of the students who began at a 4-year institution in 2003-04 transferred from the institution where they had started.

NCES 2008341 Data File: Common Core of Data, School District Financial Survey FY 2006 Final
This data file and documentation contain finance data for public elementary and secondary education at the school district level, for fiscal year 2006, and school year 2005-06. Revenues are reported by source, and expenditures are reported by function and object. Student membership data are also included. Data are submitted to NCES by state education agencies.

This brief publication contains data on revenues and expenditures per pupil made by school districts for school year 2005-06. Median per pupil revenue and expenditure data are reported by state, as well as values at the 5th and 95th percentiles. Data for charter schools are reported separately. There are also discussions on the different types of school districts, and other resources that may be helpful in analyzing school district level data. Revenues and expenditures for the 100 largest school districts are included, as well as federal revenues by program. For total revenues and expenditures for public education made by states and the nation, readers should refer to the state-level "Revenues and Expenditures for Public Elementary and Secondary Education: School Year 2005-06" (NCES 2008-328)
