Washington, D.C. – February 22, 2008 – Representative Luis G. Fortuño of Puerto Rico today hosted a special workshop conducted by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for local nonprofit arts organizations. The workshop was part of the agency's outreach to Puerto Rico non-profit organizations to inform them about federal arts funding opportunities.
At a news conference after the workshop, NEA Director of Communications Felicia Knight explained the purpose of the workshop. "The National Endowment for the Arts is committed to supporting the arts in communities throughout the United States, including all U.S. Territories," said Ms. Knight. "I am delighted to be here in Puerto Rico today to encourage local arts organizations to apply for federal arts grants."
"I look forward to continue strengthening the partnership between Puerto Rico and the National Endowment for the Arts in order to promote a better understanding of the resources available to all organizations that have as their mission the education and promotion of the arts and the preservation of our rich and unique cultural heritage," commented Congressman Fortuño.
The news conference and grants workshop were held at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico. Felicia Knight and Doug Sonntag, NEA Director of Dance, led the free workshop, which included a discussion of federal opportunities for projects that:
provide hands-on learning in the arts for children and youth (pre-K to Grade 12) in schools, arts organizations, and community centers;
help preserve cultural traditions through documentation, publications, exhibits, apprenticeships, and conservation;
provide access to the arts in underserved communities; and
involve the creation or presentation of works of art, including performances, exhibitions, and festivals.
The previous day, February 21st, Ms. Knight toured the Museo de Arte de Ponce and the Museum at Universidad del Turabo.
The NEA is a public agency dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts - both new and established - and providing leadership in arts education. Established by Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government, the Arts Endowment is the largest annual national funder of the arts, bringing great art to all 50 states, and U.S. territories, including rural areas, inner cities, and military bases.
