U.S. State Department Sponsors Foreign Journalists to Attend The 2008 NEA Arts Journalism InstituteHosted by the American Dance Festival, June 21-July 11, 2008 June 30, 2008
Durham, N.C. -- The American Dance Festival (ADF) welcomes three foreign journalists to the 2008 NEA Arts Journalism Institute for Dance Criticism. The U.S. State Department Bureau of Educational Affairs has funded this cultural exchange, which will bring writers from Bogotá, Colombia to participate in the three-week institute June 21 to July 11. The Colombian writers will join nine competitively selected American journalists at the 75th annual ADF, held on the campus of Duke University in Durham, N.C. The NEA Arts Journalism Institute for Dance Criticism is designed for professional journalists interested in refining their skills in writing about dance and analyzing choreography. As members of the ADF community, participants will attend an extensive range of world-class performances, and will have ample opportunity to converse with the Festival's special guests, teachers, faculty, students, and choreographers. Each summer, the Institute draws critics from across the United States, bringing together a group of journalists from print, online, and broadcast media. The dance critics institute is one of three the NEA offers to promote and improve American arts journalism. Every winter, the USC Annenberg School for Communi- cation hosts the Theater and Musical Theater Institute, and each fall, the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York runs the Institute for Music and Opera. "Arts journalists are facing challenging times as are newspapers nationwide," said NEA Chairman Dana Gioia. "Our institute, administered by the American Dance Festival at Duke University, offers these writers a chance to step away from their newsrooms and busy freelancing lives to focus on the reasons they originally became arts journalists. That is, a love for writing and a passionate commitment to the arts." U.S. Participants in the 2008 NEA Arts Journalism Institute in Dance are: Renée E. D’Aoust, Clark Fort, ID Bobbi Booker, Philadelphia, PA Tarin Chaplin, Montpelier, VT French Clements, Lee, MA Clare Croft, Austin, TX Margaret Fuhrer, New York, NY Jessica Lockhart, Portland, ME Karen Michel, Pleasant Valley, NY Mary Staub, Brooklyn, NY ADF Director Charles Reinhart said, "We are delighted to be hosting this international exchange and look forward to the learning and discussion that will arise from this three-week dialogue." Also looking forward to the collaboration is Suzanne Carbonneau, Director of the Institute. Ms. Carbonneau is a dance critic and historian whose writing has appeared in The Washington Post and The New York Times. She holds a doctorate in performance studies from New York University and is currently working on a book about the choreographer Paul Taylor.
