This site also includes additional resources, such as databases of manufacturers and suppliers of recycled content products.

Hazardous/Toxic Components

The U.S. EPA Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Program is a federal-wide program that contains comprehensive web-based tools, documents, and information to assist Executive agencies with making environmentally sound purchasing choices. The Database of Environmental Information for Products and Services contains environmental performance information about a variety of materials.

The Environmental Preferable Purchasing General Training Tool is an interactive, multimedia presentation of the concepts behind environmentally preferable purchasing. "Topic 16: Hazard Factors Associated with Materials" lists ways in which materials can be hazardous. The training tool does not contain specific measurement tools, but the case studies present example calculations.

Lists of hazardous chemicals and materials to consider include:

EPA's Toxics Release Inventory Program provides a Current List of TRI Chemicals and guidance documents for chemical specific and industry specific guidelines for measuring toxics.

TRI chemicals identified as carcinogens by OSHA

Annexes A and B of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) (PDF, 137KB, 34 pp) Exit disclaimer contain lists of POPs to be eliminated and restricted.

EPA's Persistent Bioaccumulative and Toxic (PBT) Chemical Program provides lists of chemicals identified as Level 1 PBTs or Level 2 substances by the Binational Toxic Strategy of the U.S. and Canada.

Materials considered hazardous under Hazardous Materials Regulations (Title 49 CFR Parts 100-185), are managed by the Department of Transportation's Office of Hazardous Material Study Exit disclaimer. For more information search interpretations of hazardous materials, click on Hazmut Interpretations Exit disclaimer. A list of hazardous materials can be found in Chapter 1, Subchapter 3, Part 172.101, Hazardous Materials Table Exit disclaimer.
