FY 2005 Grant Awards: Folk Arts Infrastructure Initiative

Some details of the projects listed below are subject to change, contingent upon prior Endowment approval.


Alabama State Council on the Arts
Montgomery, AL

To support a touring exhibition and catalogue documenting the 20-year history of the Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program. The project will honor participating artists and foster a greater awareness of the apprenticeship program for both the general public and potential applicants.

Alliance for California Traditional Arts
Fresno, CA

To support continuation of the Traditional Arts Development Program. The program will consist of technical assistance through a mentoring program, and a gathering of artists and funders.

Arkansas State University
State University, AR

To support a folk arts coordinator position and related costs. Responsibilities will include field research in the Mississippi Delta Region of eastern Arkansas, and integration of folk artists and folklife resources into ongoing programming at the Arkansas Arts Council and the Arkansas State University.

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts
Harrisburg, PA

To support continuation of the Folk Arts Support Centers. The project will expand fieldwork and outreach into underserved regions of the state and develop statewide strategies to preserve and enhance folk and traditional arts.

District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities

To support the citywide folk arts program. The program will consist of an online exhibit, a DC Folklife digest, professional development for folk artits, continuation of the Dance DC Festival, and partial support of the folklorist position to administer these programs.

To support the Louisiana Voices Folklife in Education Project. The program will offer a blend of high- and low-tech resources that, in addition to providing lessons in folklife, provide teachers with Social Studies and English Language Arts content standards.

To support the Folklife Radio Series, the Folklife Apprenticeship Program, Folklife Days, Festival Outreach, and partial support of the outreach coordinator position to coordinate project activities. Project goals include an increased awareness throughout the state of Florida's traditional culture.

Indiana University

To support the Indiana Instruments Project. The project will support a survey of musical instrument builders, apprenticeships and workshops with master musicians and artisans, and production of an audio tour and CD.

Institute for Community Research, Inc.

To support the statewide folk arts program. Program activities will include fieldwork, technical assistance, programming, special projects in education, and partial support of a program director to administer the projects.

Kentucky Arts Council

To support a folklorist position and related costs to administer project activities. Responsibilities will include the Community Scholars Program, as well as other educational programs and partnerships with diverse groups.

Maine Arts Commission

To support the Community Folklorist-in-Residence and the Traditional Arts Apprenticeship programs. The programs are designed to bring recognition to local artistic traditions, and to honor and support the artists who continue to practice these traditions.

Maryland State Arts Council

To support the fifth year of Maryland Traditions. Activities will include support of a folklorist position at Frostburg State University to coordinate project programs, fieldwork, continuation of the apprenticeship program, an online database, and a Traditional Arts Summit.

Massachusetts Cultural Council

To support expansion of the Folk Arts and Heritage Program. Core program activities will include fieldwork, artist grants, Traditional Arts Apprenticeships and a statewide traveling exhibition titled Keepers of Tradition: Folk Arts in Massachusetts.

Michigan State University

To support the Michigan Traditional Arts Apprenticeship and Michigan Heritage Awards programs and related costs. The project will support master-apprentice pairs, partial salary of the program coordinator to administer and evaluate the projects, and exhibits about both programs.

Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation

To support a folk and traditional arts program associate position and related costs. Core responsibilities will include fieldwork to identify traditional artists and their needs, the integration of fieldwork into other programs at the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, and the creation of links to allied field and funding resources.

Nebraska Arts Council

To support activities of the Nebraska Folklife Network. Activities will include technical assistance to traditional artists, tradition-bearers, cultural communities, and organizations, as well as fieldwork in African American and Bosnian communities, and creation of two cultural educational traveling kits.

Nevada Arts Council

To support expansion of the Folklife Education Initiative. The project will create a roster of visual and performing artists who will demonstrate their skills at educational and community institutions.

New Mexico Arts
Santa Fe, NM

To support continuation of the Folk Arts Apprenticeship and Community Fieldworker Network programs. Practitioners for the apprenticeship program are sought in the course of fieldwork with the assistance of trained lay folklorists or community scholars participating in the Community Fieldworker Network program.

North Carolina Arts Council
Raleigh, NC

To support the executive director of the North Carolina Folklife Institute (an office within the North Carolina Arts Council) and related costs. Core responsibilities of the position will include heritage tourism projects in coastal, piedmont, and mountain communities, as well as development of a Web site and production of a CD.

North Dakota Council on the Arts

To support the Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program and related costs. The program will encourage the preservation of North Dakota's diverse folk traditions, especially those that are rare and endangered, by allowing master artists to work with apprentices in long-term, one-to-one teaching/learning situations.

Ohio Arts Council

To support continuation of the Ohio Folk Arts Initiative. Core activities will include fieldwork and documentation, the Ohio Heritage Fellowship Program, presentation of folk and traditional artists at the Cityfolk Festival, and support of archival activities for folk arts material collected throughout the state.

To support ongoing efforts to document the folklife of the state. The project will include development of an infrastructure that links individuals, communities, and organizations, as well as support artists and traditional groups through preservation and community and economic development.

Oregon Arts Commission
Salem, OR

To support the Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. The project is designed to increase the program's visibility within Native American communities, especially through apprenticeships and school-based programs.

Rhode Island State Council on the Arts

To support the Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program and related costs. The program will foster the sharing and passing on of traditional skills within cultural communities.

South Carolina Arts Commission
Columbia, SC

To support continuation of the Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Initiative (TAAI), the Institute for Community Scholars (ICS), and the Folklife & Education Initiative (FEI). The continuation of the programs will create long-lasting partnerships at the local and state level, and provide models for folklife documentation efforts.

South Dakota Arts Council

To support a folklorist position and related costs to administer folklife activities in the state. Responsibilities will include the coordination of the Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program, a Traditional Textiles Exhibit, and Web page development.

Vermont Folklife Center

To support continuation of a state-wide Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program and related costs. The program will encourage the preservation of living traditional arts by funding master artists to work with less experienced apprentices in order to convey time-honored skills and knowledge.

Washington State Arts Commission

To support a folk arts coordinator positon and related costs. Responsibilities will include continuation of the Folk Arts in the Parks Initiative that will develop programs connecting many of the state's 120 parks with local communities through concerts, festivals, exhibits, and demonstrations.

West Plains Council on the Arts, Inc.

To support a folklorist position and related costs. Responsibilities will include supporting the work of traditional artists in the region, assisting local arts agenices, and enhancing region-wide strategic plans for cultural tourism.

Wisconsin Arts Board

To support coordination of a teacher network and an educational Web site. Core activities will include development of the organization Wisconsin Teachers of Local Culture (WTLC), and continued production of the Wisconsin Folks Web site.

Wyoming Arts Council

To support a folklife program specialist position and related costs. Responsibilities will include the identification, documentation, presentation, and promotion of folk and traditional arts and artists.
