Biography:
I am on leave from Vanderbilt University, where I have been a faculty member since 1987. My research focuses on machine learning and cognitive modeling, notably unsupervised learning, clustering and concept formation, incremental learning, empirical/analytic hybrid learning, relationships between supervised and unsupervised learning, learning and problem solving, computational models of human concept learning and categorization, hypothesis generation and evaluation, interactive induction (i.e., human-in-the-loop induction), relational learning, and mining genomic data with semi-supervised rule-based learning. I have taught courses in artificial intelligence, machine learning, database design and database management systems, formal languages and automata theory, data structures, and other areas of computer science. I am also particularly interested in incorporating treatments of ethics and contemporary issues into technical courses, implications of artificial intelligence on perceptions of personhood, personal data mining and analysis (e.g., to characterize and understand individual glucose/insulin dynamics), and artificial intelligence applications to issues stemming from climate change. More details on my background can be found at http://www.vuse.vanderbilt.edu/~dfisher.
