National Council on the Arts MembersMiguel Campaneria (Port-au-Prince, Haiti)Miguel Campaneria is a choreographer and dance company artistic director. In 2008, he was appointed as artistic director to the R.M.T. Academie de Danse in Haiti. He was appointed Artistic Director of the Balleteatro Nacional de Puerto Rico in 2005. Previously, he served as artistic director of the Ballet Municipal de San Juan. Born in Cuba, Campaneria trained at the National Ballet School of Cuba with Alicia Alonso and was promoted to soloist with the National Ballet of Cuba at the age of 18. Upon leaving Cuba, he danced with such companies as Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, the Pennsylvania Ballet, the Harkness Ballet, and American Ballet Theatre. In 1986, he joined the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre as a principal dancer. Campaneria's repertoire included principal roles in the classics like Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and Giselle, and contemporary works such as George Balanchine's Serenade and Harald Lander's Etudes. He has staged classics such as Coppelia, Paquita, and Pas de Quatre, and his choreographed works include the solo Reflections for the Charleston (WV) Ballet. In 1983, he won a special prize at the International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria, and was invited to the White House by President Ronald Reagan to receive his personal congratulations. Campaneria has been on the summer faculty of the Point Park College dance program in Pittsburgh, a guest teacher at the Oregon Ballet Theatre School and Tampa Performing Arts, and has frequently appeared as a guest artistic adviser, coach, and choreographer with three dance companies in Japan.
