Jalalzadeh-Azar Recognized at 2005 Annual ASHRAE Conference

Ali Jalalzadeh-Azar, senior engineer at NREL, received the Crosby Field Award at the annual American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Conference in Denver. His paper, A Comparison of Electrical and Thermal-Load Following CHP Systems, was judged to be the best paper presented before the Society in 2004. The paper also received an ASHRAE Poster Presentation Award, given to peer-reviewed technical papers with the best visual and technical information presented at Society meetings.

The Crosby Field Award is named for Presidential Member Crosby Field, whose ideas and work helped shape the industry.

Realization of the full benefits of implementing the combined heat and power (CHP) concept in buildings hinges upon optimum CHP system integration, sizing and operation in parallel with, or independent of, the electrical utility grid. This realization necessitates assessment of the appropriate CHP design/operation possibilities and selection of the best candidate for a given application. Electrical- and thermal-load-following CHP models are among such candidates. The paper performs a thermodynamic analysis on a thermal-load-following CHP system and compares the results with those of a previously studied grid-independent, electrical-load-following model.
