The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) uses complex multi-stage probability sampling designs to create student samples that generate population and student group estimates with low sampling variability (see NAEP Sample Design). Student sampling weights improve the validity of inferences to be drawn between the student samples and their respective populations by helping to ensure that the results of the assessment are fully representative of the target population. To estimate sampling variability, NAEP assessments use the jackknife replication method to generate replicate weights. Weighting procedures often differ between the national main assessment and the state assessment because target populations, assessment subjects, and sampling stages differ.
