NAEP Instruments Instruments for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)Each student is given a booklet containing separately timed blocks of items. The blocks include a set of general background questions, one or more blocks of cognitive items, subject area background questions, and background questions about their motivation and familiarity with the assessment tasks. As a way of accommodating students with special needs, the National Assessment of Education (NAEP) offers provisions such as large-print booklets, bilingual glossaries, or magnifying equipment where available.
