Preserve America Community:
Lebanon, Kentucky

Lebanon (population 5,718) was incorporated in 1815. Its prime location on the railroad made it a strategic target during the Civil War, and it was the site of three battles.

Part of the community was burned by Confederate raider General John Hunt Morgan. A number of antebellum buildings remain, however, and downtown Lebanon is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district.

The city currently is working to adapt two important historic buildings-the Lebanon Senior High School (1918) and the Lebanon Junior High School (1938)-into a community center.
