Evidence Based Guidelines for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Women

Assessment, Prevention and Intervention
(Recommended for those who may prescribe medications for CHD)

Slide set which illustrates a one hour lecture with current guidelines for the prevention of heart disease in women, including epidemiology, recommended lifestyle interventions, and indication for pharmacotherapy (e.g., aspirin, statins).

Prevention
(Recommended for students or for those who are unlikely to prescribe medications for CHD)

Slide set which illustrates a one hour lecture about current guidelines for the prevention of heart disease in women with a focus on lifestyle factors and up-to-date information on supplements and menopause hormone therapy.

Advanced Learners
(Recommended for those who are more knowledgeable about CHD)

Slide set which illustrates a one hour lecture about current guidelines for the prevention of heart disease in women, emphasizing guidelines which have been recently updated or apply to areas of controversy among experts. Suitable for primary care audiences who have significant experience preventing and treating coronary artery disease in women.

Learning Objectives: After completion of this educational activity, individuals will be able to:  

  1. Present strategies to assess and stratify women into high, intermediate, lower, and optimal risk categories for cardiovascular disease,
  2. Summarize lifestyle approaches to the prevention of cardiovascular disease in women,
  3. Review evidence-based approaches to cardiovascular disease prevention for patients with hypertension, lipid abnormalities, and diabetes,
  4. Review an evidence based approach to pharmacological risk intervention for women at high and intermediate risk of cardiovascular events,
  5. Summarize commonly used therapies that should not be initiated for the prevention or treatment of heart disease, because they lack benefit, or because risks outweigh benefits.

Educational Slide Modules (PowerPoint files*)

Slide modules form a collection of slides about topics relevant to the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease women. Slides from modules can be used to create a lecture about heart disease in women, or be inserted into lectures about other topics (e.g., menopause prevention).

  • Epidemiology - Information specific to African Americans, Latinas, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, American Indians, and Alaskan Natives.
  • Risk Factors - In depth information about lifestyle interventions for smoking, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia.
  • Risk Assessment Tool - Using clinical information to define cardiovascular risk.
  • Diagnosis - Sensitivity and specificity of tests, gender differences in diagnosis, and indications for testing.
  • Prognosis and Treatment Outcomes - Information highlighting gender differences.
  • Update on Postmenopausal Hormone Therapy - Background information on studies about the effect of menopausal hormone therapy in women and illustrations of results from the HERS and Women's Health Initiative studies.
  • Evidence Based Guidelines - Current American Heart Association/ National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Guidelines about cardiovascular disease prevention in women.
  • Behavioral Aspects - A one hour lecture about practical evidence-based approaches to behavioral change, including the counseling framework for change (access, advice, agree, assist, and arrange) and the Prochaska and Di Clemente model of stages of behavioral change (pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, transformation.)
  • Presentation Resources and Internet Resources - Tools for presentations, including slides illustrating suggested goals and objectives, and website information for clinical decision making.
