While screening passenger bags at a checkpoint X-ray at Newport News/Williamsburg (Va.) International Airport, security officers recently discovered an amplifier inside a metallic container used to hold breath mints. The passenger, an electrical engineer and musician, said his parents did not like the guitar played loudly in the house so he designed a small amplifier powered by a 9-volt battery. The gadget has a volume switch and ports that plug in the guitar and earphones.
