Research Project: LOWERING RAFFINOSE FAMILY OLIGOSACCHARIDES IN SOYBEANS

Location: Plant Genetics Research

Project Number: 3622-21000-029-01
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: May 01, 2005
End Date: Mar 31, 2008

Objective:
Identify polymorphisms in genes associated with low RFO train in identified lines. Associate low RFO alleles with phenotype in segregating populations. Develop low RFO germplasm with molecular markers for efficient incorporation of the trait into elite lines.

Approach:
Survey soybean germplasm to identify sources of low RFO trait. Lines with low RFO will be characterized for expression of mutant or polymorphic forms of genes in the RFO biosynthesis pathway. Identified polymorphic alleles will be tested for segregation with the low RFO trait in progeny derived from crosses with wild-type cultivars. Molecular markers for low RFO will be developed during this research.
