Researchers at NREL are working to achieve net-zero energy buildings by focusing on two key buildings technologies—windows and building integrated solar systems—to significantly reduce the energy consumption in residential and commercial buildings. A zero energy building produces as much energy on-site as it consumes on an annual basis, primarily by using stand-alone or grid-tied photovoltaics and other solar energy technologies.
