NCES 2008013 Public-Use Data Files and Documentation: Educational Technology in Teacher Education Programs for Initial Licensure
This file contains data from a 2006 quick-response survey titled “Educational Technology in Teacher Education Programs for Initial Licensure.” The study provides information on how teacher candidates within teacher education programs for initial licensure at 4-year postsecondary institutions are being prepared to use educational technology once they enter the field. The survey questions focus on the characteristics of teacher education programs for initial licensure, regardless of whether the programs are at the undergraduate or graduate level. NCES released the results of the survey in the publication Educational Technology in Teacher Education Programs for Initial Licensure. In May 2006, questionnaires and cover letters for the study were mailed to all Title IV degree-granting 4-year postsecondary institutions in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The letter introduced the study, and requested that the questionnaire be completed by the person or persons at the institution most knowledgeable about the role of educational technology in the institution’s teacher education programs for initial licensure. Respondents were also offered the option of completing the survey via the Web. Telephone follow-up for survey nonresponse and data clarification was initiated in June 2006, and data collection was completed in September 2006. The final response rate was 95 percent. Respondents were asked about the educational technology-related topics and practices taught within teacher education programs for initial licensure (e.g., using Internet resources and communication tools for instruction, creating or using digital portfolios, using technology to access or manipulate data to guide instruction). They were asked to report the extent to which teacher candidates are taught to use technology tools for a variety of purposes (e.g., enhancing or enriching classroom instruction, assessing individual student progress, designing instructional interventions). Information was collected on the extent to which teacher candidates are able to practice what they learn during their field experiences and the extent to which this opportunity is impeded by a variety of barriers within classrooms (e.g., availability of technology infrastructure, willingness of supervising teachers to integrate technology, competing priorities in the classrooms). Respondents also reported the perceived program outcomes for graduates (e.g., the ability to construct project-based learning lessons, recognize when students with special needs may benefit from adaptive/assistive technology, integrate technology into instruction). The extent to which various factors act as barriers to the integration of educational technology into the daily teaching and learning environment of teacher candidates was also collected.

NCES 2008011 Public-Use Data Files and Documentation: Public School Principals’ Perceptions of Their School Facilities: Fall 2005
This file contains data from a 2005 fast-response survey titled "Public School Principals' Perceptions of Their School Facilities: Fall 2005." The study provides information about principals’ satisfaction with various environmental factors in their schools, and the extent to which they perceive those factors as interfering with the ability of the school to deliver instruction. Environmental factors included lighting, temperature control, air quality, and structural conditions. The study also provides information on the extent of the match between the enrollment and the capacity of the school buildings. NCES released the results of the survey in the publication Public School Principals Report on Their School Facilities: Fall 2005. Questionnaires and cover letters for the study were mailed to the principal of each sampled school in mid-September 2005. The letter introduced the study, and requested that the questionnaire be completed only by the principal of the school listed on the label. Respondents were also offered the option of completing the survey via the Web. Telephone follow-up for survey nonresponse and data clarification was initiated in early October and completed in late January 2006. The final response rate was 90 percent. Principals were asked about their satisfaction with various environmental factors in classrooms located in permanent buildings and in portable (temporary) buildings (if applicable) in their school, and the extent to which they perceived those environmental factors as interfering with the ability of the school to deliver instruction in those classrooms. They were also asked about the ways in which their school used portable (temporary) buildings and the reasons for using them, and the availability of dedicated room or facilities for particular subjects (science labs, art rooms, music rooms, and gymnasium) and the extent to which these facilities were perceived to support instruction. Principals were also asked about the enrollment and design capacity of their schools, and approaches for coping with overcrowding (if applicable).

This CD-ROM contains data and documentation files for the NAEP 2006 national assessments in civics and U.S. history at grades 4, 8, and 12, and economics at grade 12, for use in the analysis of NAEP data by secondary researchers. A Data Companion is provided in electronic portable document format (PDF). This document contains information on the contents and use of the data files as well as the assessment design and its implications for analysis. NAEP datasets from 2002 onward require a Tool Kit with the updated NAEPEX. Your organization must apply for and be granted a restricted-use data license in order to obtain these data.

NCES 2007382 Restricted-use Teacher Status Files
Data on the 2004-05 teacher status of interviewed teachers as provided by principals from the 2003-04 SASS school, from the first sampling stage for the 2004-05 Teacher Follow-up Survey. Available as a merge file for the 2003-04 SASS. Documentation on the codes used, the limitations of these data and recommendations for analysis is included as a PDF.

NCES 2008322 Education Longitudinal Study of 2002/06 Data Analysis System (DAS)
The ELS:2002/06 Data Analysis System (DAS) contains base year, first follow-up, and second follow-up data on a sample of about 16,000 students who were first surveyed as high school sophomores in the spring of 2004. The first follow-up occurred in the spring 2004, when most of the sample members were high school seniors. The second follow-up occurred in 2006 when most of the sample members who attended college were college sophomores. Both those who attended college and those who didn’t are included in the data. Data in the DAS pertain to the courses taken and achievement of the sample members when they were in high school, their family backgrounds and other experiences in high school. For those who considered going to college, there is data on which colleges they applied to, and the acceptances and aid offers they received from those colleges. Other data include the employment experiences of both those who attended college and those who didn't, the earnings and some aspects of the work situation of those who did not attend college, and, for both those who attended college and didn't, data about other life experiences and outcomes, such as military service, volunteer service, and family formation. A data file manual is available as NCES 2007-347.

NCES 2008310 The NCES Common Core of Data Local Education Agency Universe Survey Dropout and Completion Restricted-Use Data File: School Year 2004–05, Final File 1a
This Restricted-Use Data file is constructed from data collected through two CCD nonfiscal surveys: the Public Elementary/Secondary School Universe Survey and the Local Education Agency Universe Survey. The reported completion data have been perturbed (i.e., disguised) in this file to prevent the identification of any individual who failed to receive a diploma at the conclusion of 12th grade. Dropout data were not perturbed. Enrollment bases for the dropout rates were also created for this data file. The file does not include an enrorllment base for high school completion rates.

The CCD Local Education Agency-Level Public-Use Data File on Public School Dropouts is constructed from data collected through the CCD Public Elementary/Secondary School Universe Survey and Local Education Agency Universe Survey. In addition to dropout counts, the file contains the enrollment bases that can be used in calculating dropout rates. This file contains data about the number of dropouts from LEAs enrolling 1,000 or more students, as reported on the Common Core of Data (CCD) Local Education Agency survey for school year 2004–05.

NCES 2008309 2003-04 Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS) and 2004-05 Teacher Follow-up Survey (TFS) (CD ROM) Restricted-Use Data with Electronic Codebook
The restricted-use codebook contains the count of responses for each data item and all components of SASS in 2003-2004 and the 2004-2005 TFS. The TFS data and User's manual are the added features to this re-release of the 2003-2004 SASS restricted-use ECB.
