Accountable governance delegate Mariya Abubakarova, editor in chief of a popular newspaper in the Russian republic of Chechnya, during orientation at the Library of Congress on Oct. 2, 2008 | WASHINGTON, DC – As editor-in-chief of the Stolitsa Plus, one of the most popular newspapers in the Chechen capital of Grozny, Mariya Abubakarova has a much more dangerous job than her American counterparts. The journalist is looking forward to studying the safer yet still tumultuous world of political journalism in the United States during her October accountable governance exchange to Los Angeles.
The International Visitors Council of Los Angeles has arranged for Abubakarova and her fellow delegates to visit the Pasadena Star News to discuss the media’s role in politics, campaigns and elections, and to explore with a political scientist how Americans understand and learn about politics from the U.S. news media. Other scheduled activities include a reception at the Los Angeles Press Club and a meeting with the staff of the Rock the Vote, a nonprofit that encourages youth involvement in the political process.
“After all that I have experienced in my life in Chechnya, I want to experience life in America; see how an American family lives. Our region is going through so many changes now and I may not be able to directly apply my Open World experience right away. But in the future, I will work hard to apply the professional principles that I learned in America.”
Upon returning to Grozny, Abubakarova will share her American experience with the Stolitsa Plus readership: “I will write an article describing the extraordinary experience of someone from Chechnya to go to America on a program such as Open World.”
