A team of engineers focuses on bridging the gap between research
and commercial operations, which is critical for the scale-up of biomass conversion
technology. Linking rigorous process simulations with standard financial methods provides
process designs that help determine the technical feasibility and economics of
biorefineries producing fuels, chemicals, and power at an industrial scale.
Conducting full life cycle analyses for all of the products of biomass
conversion is important for determining environmental and economic feasibility. NREL's
analysts use a life cycle inventory modeling package and supporting databases to conduct
life cycle analyses. These tools can be applied on a global, regional, local, or project
basis. They can also be used to examine the impacts of individual segments of the biomass
conversion life cycle, such as different feedstocks, new process technologies, or
alternative end-use designs.
The team searches for and develops cutting edge analysis tools and methods
to ensure that the assessment, whether it is to direct existing research programs or
identify new opportunities, is of highest quality.
