Environmental Planning

NREL provides technical support worldwide to incorporate clean energy technologies in environmental planning and evaluate the environmental benefits achieved through the deployment of renewable energy. This includes:

Environmental Co-Benefits Analysis

We can assist with the integration of environmental strategies into your energy plan. NREL calls upon a host of technologies and policies for clean energy to tailor cost-effective approaches to meet your energy and environmental goals.

Our capabilities include:

  • Enhancing and improving the integrated environmental strategies approach and methodology for supporting effective and efficient policy
  • Helping local teams customize and adapt integrated environmental strategies to local conditions
  • Designing and implementing specific program activities in collaboration local teams
  • Managing in-country activities with project partners and local teams
  • Providing technical assistance for carrying out co-benefits policy assessments, including analysis for developing air quality policies and regulations
  • Encouraging mitigation measures to achieve quantifiable human health, environmental and global climate benefits.

Climate-Friendly Technology Development

NREL helps foster the development and diffusion of climate-friendly technologies in international and developing countries, and U.S. state and local communities. Technologies include:

Air Quality Analysis

NREL contributes its technical expertise in clean energy technologies to help governments organizations develop plans and policies for reducing air pollution as well as greenhouse gas emissions.

We analyze the options and implications of air-quality policies and regulations for renewable energy markets, specifically with respect to:

  • Acid rain
  • Ozone
  • Regional haze
  • Fine particulates
  • Nitrogen oxide (NOx)
  • Greenhouse gas emissions.

Our analyses include environmental benefits modeling and tools to estimate the costs of different levels of emissions reductions.

We also assess air pollution issues and the role energy-efficient and renewable energy technologies play in addressing these issues.
