What WSDOT is doing about Climate Change?

Reinvent Your Commute and reduce your carbon footprint

WSDOT is addressing Climate Change

In Washington, transportation accounts for nearly half (47%) of the total greenhouse gas emissions, including emissions from cars, trucks, planes, and ships.

WSDOT is developing effective, measurable and balanced emission reduction strategies to create more efficient driving conditions, reduce the amount of driving, and introduce more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Reducing Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) is one approach to reducing transportation-related green house gas emissions. The state set the following VMT reduction goals:

  • 18% reduction by 2020
  • 30% reduction by 2035
  • 50% reduction by 2050

WSDOT is working in partnership with the Governor’s Climate Action Team and is co-leading the Climate Change Transportation Implementation Working Group.
