ALAN VINEGRAD, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New
York, today announced the creation of the Computer Crimes and Intellectual
Property Section within his offices criminal division. This section
is the product of a Department-wide initiative to aggressively investigate
and prosecute crimes in cyberspace. The initiative is the outgrowth of
a pilot project conducted under the leadership of FBI Director Robert
S. Mueller, III, in his former capacity as U.S. Attorney for the Northern
District of California. The new section will be responsible for investigating
and prosecuting a wide variety of computer-related and intellectual property
crimes, including computer intrusions (for example, hacking and proliferation
of viruses), the theft of computer components and software, economic espionage,
trade secret thefts, copyright and trademark violations, and other internet-related
crimes. ### |
