In May 2006, TSA Los Angeles (LAX) Transportation Security Officer Juan Carillo was on his way to work when unknown assailants opened fire on his car. He and his wife suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and embarked on a recovery from an event that would alter their lives forever.

Carillo suffered severe nerve damage and after extensive physical therapy, was able to return to work the week of July 16. He has assisted his wife in her slow recovery from a spinal cord injury that left her paralyzed from the waist down.

With assistance from friends and colleagues at LAX, Carillo was able to concentrate on his recovery while receiving his full salary, thanks to the generosity of TSA's Voluntary Leave Transfer Program. This agency-wide program is available to all employees who need extra leave to cover medical emergencies.

"I am happy to be back to work and restart my life," Carillo said. "I would like to thank TSA leadership as well as the employees for their continued support and understanding."

Raul Matute, Carillo's security manager, has maintained constant contact with him since the incident occurred and is thrilled that he is back at work. "It's a great day for LAX," said Matute. "We want to welcome him home with open arms."

The California Highway Patrol says it still has no leads or suspects in the shooting.
