About the Alaska Region

Iceberg in the Beaufort SeaThe Minerals Management Service (MMS) is a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior. In the Alaska Region, our mission is to manage the mineral resources of the Alaska Outer Continental Shelf  in an environmentally sound and safe manner.

The Alaska OCS Region encompasses 600 million acres and more than 6,000 miles of coastline. The diversity of ecosystems in the Region is astounding.

It is in this environment that the Alaska Region must find a way to provide the opportunity to explore for petroleum and still preserve the environment and the lifestyle of the people living adjacent to its coast.   From this page you can read a message from the Regional Director, view an organizational chart of the Alaska Region, locate our Anchorage office and see just how big Alaska really is.
