Conservation Plans Released for Eastern Shore of Virginia and Fisherman Island Refuges
Region 5, May 3, 2004
The staff at Eastern Shore of Virginia and Fisherman Island National Wildlife refuges released their final comprehensive conservation plan in May. Highlights of the 15-year plan include maximizing available food and shelter for migratory birds, monitoring federal-threatened species such as the piping plover and the Northeastern beach tiger beetle, and expanding the refuge's acquisition boundary to include an additional 6,030 acres. The plan also calls for removing a 300 foot-tall communications tower on the refuge and improving a boat that provides the only public deep water access for commercial watermen and recreational anglers at the southern tip of the Delmarva Peninsula.
