LIMA, Peru—U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez today released a statement regarding the real gross domestic product (GDP) report which showed that the American economy increased at an annual rate of 2.5 percent in the second quarter of 2006. Secretary Gutierrez is leading a Presidential Delegation to Lima, Peru to attend the Inauguration of His Excellency Alan García Pérez, President-Elect of the Republic of Peru.
“The U.S. economy is growing at 4.1 percent over the first six months of this year. President Bush’s economic policies have steered America on a path toward even greater prosperity and opportunity. Today’s GDP report confirms that America’s economy remains strong and vibrant.
"Good economic policies lead to good economic results. And that is what we are seeing today. The economy continues to provide more jobs, higher wages, and a better standard of living. The flexibility and ingenuity of U.S. workers and businesses are why the U.S. economy will continue to be one of the fastest-growing in the industrialized world."
