WASHINGTON, DC – USA.gov, the federal government’s official web portal, has won the international Government Standard of Excellence in the Web Marketing Association’s 2007 WebAward, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced today.

“This prestigious award is important because it recognizes our success in using technology to simplify citizen access to official government information and services,” said GSA Administrator Lurita Doan. “When we succeed, we also strengthen the crucial bond between citizens and their government.”

The award recognizes USA.gov – which is managed by GSA’s Office of Citizen Services and Communication - as one of the most effective websites in government today.  USA.gov was one of more than 1,000 website entries from 19 countries evaluated on design, innovation, content, interactivity, copywriting, ease of use and use of technology.  The judges included nationally recognized members of the media, advertising executives, website designers, corporate marketing executives, content providers and webmasters.

The award follows GSA’s launch of the redesigned USA.gov in May 2007.  The new design incorporated suggestions from users of USA.gov and GobiernoUSA.gov, the Spanish language counterpart of USA.gov.  GSA’s goal has long been to drive more traffic to the sites by offering the information and services people want most in a user-friendly format.

The annual WebAward Competition is conducted by the Web Marketing Association, Inc., an independent organization founded to evaluate and recognize standards of excellence on the World Wide Web. Past WebAward winners include Disney Interactive, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and FedEx.com.
