Gutierrez Statement on National Volunteer Week
ANNANDALE, Va.—Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez today released the following statement on National Volunteer Week after recognizing four adult mentors from the Commerce Department for their service at a Northern Virginia school:
"Volunteers make America's communities stronger and better. National Volunteer Week is a time to acknowledge the individuals who offer their time and talents to make a difference in the lives of others. President Bush's call for Americans to make a commitment to service, integrity, and good citizenship goes hand in hand with the President's proposed American Competitiveness Initiative.
"Education is the greatest indicator of future success and prosperity. The American Competitiveness Initiative will improve math and science skills in our schools and recruit more math and science professionals into classrooms. We need to show our kids that math and science are cool--and can lead to exciting careers. I encourage employers and employees to get into the classroom as volunteers."
