Description:

Objective:

This project was proposed in order to contribute to our understanding of the metal speciation dynamics in relation to particle size and heterogeneity of the Miami River sediments. This type of information is valuable in understanding sediment resuspension and transport of contaminants in aquatic environments. Specific objectives of the study were to:

  • Determine metal speciation characteristics of the Miami River sediments in relation to particle size distribution; and Analyze metal speciation dynamics in relation to chemical heterogeneity of the sediments.
  • Evaluate the dynamics of sediment resuspension and metal desorption in relation to particle size distribution and heterogeneity of the sediments.
  • Approach:

    An extensive literature search was conducted on trace metals in sediments and metal analyses techniques. Bottom and water column samples were collected from 13 stations identified at the Miami River. The samples were collected and analyzed as described below:

  • Analysis particle size distribution and chemical composition of bottom and resuspended sediments during dredging activities;
  • Particles size distribution and chemical composition characteristics of the samples were analyzed.
  • Evaluation of the dynamics of sediment resuspension and metal desorption in relation to particle size distribution and heterogeneity of the sediments.
  • Models were developed for particle resuspension and transport. Data was used to verify the model.
  • Speciation characteristics of the sediments were analyzed.
