Novumbra hubbsi   Schultz 1929

Common Name: Olympic mudminnow

Taxonomy: available through ITIS logo

Identification: Wydoski and Whitney (1979); Page and Burr (1991).

Size: 8 cm.

Native Range: Coastal lowlands of Olympic Peninsula, Washington, from Ozette Lake and Queets River drainage (where possibly introduced), to upper Chehalis River drainage. Occasionally found in lower Deschutes River (Puget Sound drainage), apparently as a result of floodwater exchange with Chehalis River (Wydoski and Whitney 1979; Page and Burr 1991).

Nonindigenous Occurrences: It is suspected that populations in the Queets River, including the Lake Ozette system, Washington, are the result of an introduction (Wydoski and Whitney 1979). However, more recent evidence leads us to believe this is not the case (see remarks).

Means of Introduction: Unknown.

Status: Established in Washington.

Impact of Introduction: Unknown.

Remarks: The Olympic mudminnow has recently been found in two areas between the suspected "introductions", the Hoh and Quillayute rivers (Mongillo and Hallock 1997). These new locations are north of the Queets River and south of Lake Ozette. These new discoveries lead us to believe that this species is actually native to the eastern drainages of Puget Sound but hadn't been found before.
