Peprilus simillimus   (Ayres 1860)

Common Name: Pacific butterfish

Synonyms and Other Names: Pacific pompano

Taxonomy: available through ITIS logo

Identification: Miller and Lea (1972); Eschmeyer et al. (1983); Fischer et al. (1995b).

Size: 28 cm.

Native Range: Marine; Queen Charlotte Sound, British Columbia, to central Baja and Gulf of California (Miller and Lea 1972; Eschmeyer et al. 1983).



Nonindigenous Occurrences: Introduced into Salton Sea, California. See discussion of Peprilus ovatus in "Erroneous Records of Introductions."

Means of Introduction: Twelve fish entered the bait tanks through the circulation system from San Diego Bay and were knowingly introduced in 1948 as a result of stock-contamination (Dill and Cordone 1997).

Status: Extirpated in California.

Impact of Introduction: Unknown.
