Scomberomorus concolor   (Lockington 1879)

Common Name: Gulf sierra

Synonyms and Other Names: (Monterey Spanish mackerel).

Taxonomy: available through ITIS logo

Identification: Miller and Lea (1972); Collette and Nauen (1983); Eschmeyer et al. (1983); Fischer et al. (1995b).

Size: 76 cm.

Native Range: Marine. Monterey Bay to Mexico. Abundant in northern part of Gulf of California; stragglers reach southern California (Eschmeyer et al. 1983). Now confined to the northern Gulf of California (Collette and Nauen 1983).



Nonindigenous Occurrences: Introduced into Salton Sea, California, in 1950 (Walker et al. 1961; Dill and Cordone 1997).

Means of Introduction: A single fish was intentionally stocked.

Status: The introduction failed to produce a viable population and the species is extirpated in the Salton Sea.

Impact of Introduction: Unknown.
