Identification: Page (1983); Smith (1985); Page and Burr (1991); Jenkins and Burkhead (1994).

Size: 11 cm.

Native Range: Atlantic drainages from St. Lawrence River, Quebec and Ontario (absent in Maine) to Altamaha River, Georgia; St. Johns River drainage, Florida; Lake Ontario drainage, New York; mostly restricted to Coastal Plain in Virginia (Page and Burr 1991).

Nonindigenous Occurrences: A population of introduced tessellated darters was discovered in 1986 in the Little River system of the New drainage in North Carolina, just south of the Virginia border (Menhinick 1991; Jenkins and Burkhead 1994).
