Identification: Becker (1983); Page and Burr (1991); Etnier and Starnes (1993); Jenkins and Burkhead (1994).

Size: 31 cm.

Native Range: St. Lawrence-Great Lakes, Hudson Bay (Red River), and Mississippi River basins from Quebec to Alberta, and southern to northern Alabama, northern Mississippi, and northeastern Oklahoma; Hudson River drainage, New York (Page and Burr 1991).

Nonindigenous Occurrences: The stonecat was possibly introduced into the New drainage, West Virginia, where it is known from three sites in the Gauley system. It was first reported from this drainage in 1951 (Hocutt et al. 1986; Jenkins and Burkhead 1994; Stauffer et al. 1995).

Means of Introduction: Unknown; possible bait bucket introduction or stock contamination.

Status: Reported from West Virginia.

Impact of Introduction: Unknown.

Remarks: According to Taylor (1969), it may have entered the Mohawk and upper Hudson River systems in New York, from the Great Lakes as a canal immigrant.
