Puntius conchonius   (Hamilton 1822)

Common Name: rosy barb

Synonyms and Other Names: red barb

Taxonomy: available through ITIS logo

Identification: Another commonly used name is Barbus conchonius. Distinguishing characteristics and key were given in Talwar and Jhingran (1992). Color photographs appeared in Axelrod et al. (1985).

Size: 14 cm.

Native Range: Asia. Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, and Bangladesh (Talwar and Jhingran 1992).

Nonindigenous Occurrences:

A few specimens were taken from a Lake Worth Drainage District canal L-15, adjacent to a fish farm in Palm Beach County, Florida, in the late 1960s or early 1970s (Courtenay et al. 1974; Courtenay and Hensley 1979a).

The rosy barb is also established in the Loiza Reservoir and Rio Arroyata in Puerto Rico (Erdsman 1984).  Specimens have been reported in non-specific locations throughout Puerto Rico (Lee et al. 1983).

Means of Introduction: Probable escape or release from fish farm.

Status: Reported from Florida.

Impact of Introduction: Unknown.

Remarks: This species is an important ornamental fish (Talwar and Jhingran 1992).

There are no known voucher specimens.
