Ctenopharyngodon x Hypophthalmichthys idella x nobilis  

Common Name: grass carp x bighead carp

Taxonomy: available through ITIS logo

Identification: Similar to pure grass carp but with many features intermediate between the two parent species. Howells (1992) provided distinguishing features. Maximum size: Probably similar to grass carp, 75 -125 cm.

Native Range: None; artificial hybrid.

Nonindigenous Occurrences: This hybrid has been reported from the Central Arizona Project (CAP) and interconnected Salt River Project (SRP) canals in Arizona (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 1994f). It was stocked in the Salton Sea, California (Dill and Cordone 1997). A specimen was collected in Orlando, Florida (Nico 2005). It was also sold and stocked in several locations in Texas in 1989 (Howells 1992a).

Means of Introduction: Intentionally stocked by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1989 (Howells 1992a).

Status: Reported in Arizona and Texas. Eradicated in California.

Impact of Introduction: It failed to control hydrilla in the Salton Sea.

Remarks: This hybrid is believed, but not proven, to be sterile. As of 1990 it is illegal to possess this hybrid in Texas (Howells 1992a).
