Common Name: Red Sea bannerfish

Taxonomy: available through ITIS logo

Identification: Elongate white dorsal filament; ground color white suffused with yellow; two black bands on sides, anterior-most pasing just behind the head and encompassing eye; soft dorsal, pectoral, anal, and caudal fins yellow; pelvic fins black.  Similar in appearance to Heniochus acuminatus and H. diphreutes, but readily distinguished from these species by its more yellowish ground color and placement of the first black band next to the eye.  From Allen et al. (1998).

Size: Max. size to 18 cm (Allen et al. 1998).

Native Range: Restricted to the Red Sea (where it is common in the Gulf of Aqaba) and adjacent Gulf of Aden (Allen et a. 1998).

Nonindigenous Occurrences: In Florida, one individual was observed off Palm Beach (in 2006 [Reef 2008]).

Ecology: Diet includes zooplankton and benthic invertebrates (Allen et al. 1998).  Inhabits coral reefs from 3-50 m in depth (Allen et al. 1998).

Means of Introduction: Probable aquarium release.

Status:

Collected in Florida.

Impact of Introduction: Unknown.
