Pectinatella magnifica   (Leidy, 1851)

Common Name: magnificent bryozoan

Taxonomy: available through ITIS logo

Identification: Sessile, colonial organism with ciliated tentacles attached to a large gelatinous mass (Pennak 1989; Wood 1991). 

Native Range: Native to warmer waters east of the Mississippi River, uncommon to the West (Pennak 1989; Wood 1991).

Nonindigenous Occurrences: Pectinatella magnifica has been found in Texas (Neck and Fullington 1983), Idaho, Oregon, Washington. Outside the U.S., it has been found in Canada, Europe, and Asia (T. Wood, pers. comm.).

Ecology: Found in freshwater lakes and rivers (Wood 1991).

Means of Introduction: Unknown

Status: Unknown

Impact of Introduction: They have been known to clog water pipes (Wood 1991).

Remarks: This species may be cryptogenic in western states, few early surveys were conducted.
