Pomacanthus semicirculatus   (Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1831)

Common Name: semicircle angelfish, zebra angelfish

Taxonomy: available through ITIS logo

Identification:

Dorsal rays IIII (20-23); anal rays III (18-22); pectoral rays 19-21; longitudinal scale series 65-70 (Randall 2005).

Juvenile (bottom photo) distinctly different in colour and markings from adult (top photo).

Size: to 35 cm (Randall 2005).

Native Range: East coast of Africa to Palau and Fiji; southern Japan to New South Wales, Lord Howe Island and New Caledonia (Randall 2005).

Nonindigenous Occurrences: The semicircle angelfish has been collected in the waters off Boca Raton in Florida in 1999(REEF 2002) and marine waters off Broward County (Semmens 2005). One large individual was video-taped off Oahu, Hawaii in 2001-2001 (Mundy 2005).

Ecology: Found on well-developed coral reefs to depths of at least 40 m.  Solitary, the juveniles are secretive and difficult to approach.  Adults feed mainly on sponges, tunicates and algae.  From Randall (2005).

Status:

Collected in Florida and Hawaii.

Impact of Introduction: Unknown.
