Macrognathus siamensis   (Gunther, 1861)

Common Name: spotfin spiny eel

Taxonomy: available through ITIS logo

Identification: Long, eel-like fish with a compressed tail and a row of small spines along the back in front a soft-rayed dorsal fin; pectoral and anal fins present; no pelvic fins; snout is extended into a proboscis with anterior nostrils at the side (Kottelat 2001); 4-5 dark round spots on dorsal fin.

Size: Up to 200 mm SL (Kottelat 2001)

Native Range: Mekong basin in Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam; Chao Phraya basin (Kottelat 2001).

Nonindigenous Occurrences: C-111 Canal between water control structures S-18C and S-197 [Everglades region south of Homestead], Florida (P. Shafland, personal communication).

Ecology: Slow-moving or standing freshwater habitats.

Means of Introduction: Aquarium release.

Status: The eels are reproducing in this area but are limited from spread by salt water downstream but have access to other freshwater habitats to the north and west.

Impact of Introduction: Unknown.
