Gutierrez Applauds Signing of Legislation That Toughens Piracy Laws

WASHINGTON—Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez today applauded the signing of H.R. 32, the "Stop Counterfeiting in Manufactured Goods Act" that significantly strengthens U.S. piracy laws:

"One of President Bush’s top economic priorities has been to put counterfeiters and pirates who tilt the playing field against American companies out of business. The signing of H.R. 32 demonstrates the Bush administration’s commitment to protecting American businesses, workers and consumers from fake goods," Gutierrez said. "H.R. 32 ensures that we continue to protect American ideas and American innovation.

"This administration is committed to helping U.S. businesses remain competitive by protecting intellectual property so that American ingenuity remains a driving force in the United States and the world’s economy."
