IPIECA, as part of a joint industry task force with the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP), has developed, on behalf of the petroleum industry, a voluntary industry-endorsed approach for measuring and reporting GHG emissions.
The petroleum industry has recognized the need for GHG accounting and reporting guidance that is focused specifically on the industry. Current approaches vary among government reporting programs. Companies also differ in how they voluntarily report their emissions data. This variability in approaches has resulted in a lack of comparability of reported GHG emissions from company to company within specific industrial sectors, as well as a lack of comparability of results from reporting program to reporting program.

Addressing climate change requires knowing the amounts of GHG emissions being produced. In this document, API examines the differences between its Compendium of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Methodologies for the Oil and Gas Industry and other guidelines and protocols. Significant differences have been found that should be reconciled to ensure comparability of estimates and to understand the impacts associated with actions taken.
