Research Category: Hazardous Waste/Remediation , Targeted Research
Description:
Objective:Since the mid-1990s the National Urban Air Toxics Research Center (NUATRC) has funded a number of laboratory, population, and field research studies evaluating the performance of the organic vapor monitor (OVM) and/or using this dosimeter for ambient/indoor air concentration and personal exposure monitoring. The initial study was the seminal work that developed and tested the extraction and analytical protocols permitting measurement of ppb-level ambient concentrations with sample durations of 1 to 3 days rather than weeks. The purpose of this study is a review of the literature and performance evaluation of the 3M- OVM (3M Corp., St. Paul, MN) for sampling ppb-level concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) typical of community outdoor and indoor air and of personal inhalation exposures. This project began in January 2005.
The specific objectives of the research project are to:
- Obtain all the literature available in the public domain describing laboratory evaluations and measurements of VOCs in ambient, indoor, and personal air using the 3500 or 3520 3M OVM. This literature includes publications in peer reviewed journals, project reports, and doctoral dissertations.
- Review and critique the literature on the accuracy and precision of the OVMs for each of the compounds in the suite of VOCs targeted by each individual report as a function of quality assurance/quality control parameters: concentration, sample duration, temperature, humidity, and altitude (barometric pressure).
- Develop a critical review that assesses the scientific literature pertaining to the performance of the OVMs both in the laboratory and in the field. The practical goal of this critical review is to develop a manuscript that summarizes the performance parameters and limitations of the OVM that will be submitted for publication to a suitable scientific journal (e.g., Environmental Science & Technology, Journal of Exposure Analysis and Environmental Epidemiology, Atmospheric Environment) by December 31, 2005.
