DOE Names New Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy
The Department of Energy has announced the selection of Dr. Victor K. Der as the new Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy. Dr. Der will be responsible for office operations and, in support of the Assistant Secretary, he will manage the oversight of Fossil Energy's Research and Development program and the U.S. Petroleum Reserves.

Geothermal Electricity Holds Promise for Older Oil Fields
The Office of Fossil Energy's Rocky Mountain Oilfield Testing Center and Ormat Technologies Inc., of Reno, Nev., announced the first successful generation of electricity using geothermal hot water from a producing oil well. The power is used in oil field operations.  Read More >

Environmentally Safe Control of Invasive Mussels Made Possible by DOE-Funded Project
In a project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, researchers have developed an environmentally safe bacterial toxin to control zebra and quagga mussels, two non-native, invasive species that have found their way into the waterways of 25 states over the past two decades, fouling the aquatic environment as they spread.  Read More >

DOE Releases Methodology Used to Estimate Carbon Dioxide Storage Potential
The Department of Energy released its "Methodology for Development of Geologic Storage Estimates for Carbon Dioxide," a document that details the procedures used to produce the geologic resource estimates for CO2 storage potential in the upcoming 2008 Carbon Sequestration Atlas of the United States and Canada (Atlas II).  Read More >

Ensuring that we can continue to rely on clean, affordable energy from our traditional fuel resources is the primary mission of DOE's Office of Fossil Energy. Fossil fuels supply 85% of the nation's energy, and we are working on such priority projects as pollution-free coal plants, more productive oil and gas fields, and the continuing readiness of federal emergency oil stockpiles.
