Washington, DC - U.S. Secretary of Labor
Elaine L. Chao today announced that the second National Summit on Retirement
Savings will be held February 27 to March 1, 2002 at the Capital Hilton Hotel in
Washington, DC. |
The 21st Century workforce is
more mobile than ever before. One of the most important challenges facing
Americas 21st century workforce is understanding the need to
prepare for a secure financial future, said Chao. With American
workers taking more personal responsibility in saving for their own retirement,
it is essential that they be empowered with all the necessary information to be
wise investors and stewards of their own resources. |
This Summit is an opportunity to promote
ways to encourage Americans to save for a secure future. Together we can
achieve this goal, said Chao. |
Under the SAVER Act of 1997, the secretary of
labor is responsible for planning and convening three National Summits on
Retirement Savings. The first Summit was held in June 1998. The secretary is
planning the Summit in consultation with other federal departments, agencies
and private-sector businesses and associations. These groups are partners with
the government in promoting long-term financial security in retirement through
savings. |
The agenda for the Summit will be published in the
Federal Register later this year. |
People interested in becoming delegates to the
Summit should contact their Congressional representatives or the White House.
The secretary has requested that congressional leaders send their delegate
selections to the department by November 15, 2001. |
