WASHINGTON—U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez today released the following statement on the last day of Max Mayfield's 34-years of public service as the Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Hurricane Center:

"Max's leadership and convictions made a positive impact in the lives of millions of Americans who were in the path of a hurricane or a natural disaster. Max's calming voice of confidence made him a beacon of hope to the general public, emergency managers and government officials at all levels. He inspired many with his tireless advocacy of hurricane preparedness and his unwavering passion to protect lives. I and all Americans owe him a debt of gratitude and wish him well in his new endeavors."
