Description:

Objective:

The objective of this research project is to study the personal exposures to urban air toxics experienced by a group of students living in New York City (NYC) and Los Angeles (LA). The study will provide information on the roles of seasons and days of the week, different meteorological conditions, and daily activities on exposures to selected volatile organic compounds (VOC), aldehydes, and metals on particles (<2.5 microns) present in the environment. Soluble fractions of selected metals also will be assayed for correlations with source measurements. Exposure measurements will be made in indoor, outdoor, and personal environments. The investigators will relate these exposures to the apportionment of air toxics among area, point and mobile sources, as well as nonanthropogenic sources.

Progress Summary:

The study was funded in response to the National Urban Air Toxics Research Center (NUATRC) Request for Application 96-01. The project commenced in December 1997, and was scheduled to be completed in July 2002. It has been granted a no-cost extension through July 2003. The TEACH study is in compliance with the Columbia University’s Institutional Review Board guidelines and governmental human consent regulations. The investigators also have provided appropriate quality assurance and quality control procedures in accordance with NUATRC and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. The study results will be presented in two reports, one on the NYC data set and the other on the LA data set. The draft final report on the NYC data set was submitted to the NUATRC in May 2002. The report was reviewed by a team of external peer reviewers and the Center’s Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP). The comments from the SAP and the reviewers were conveyed to the investigators. A revised final report is expected in January 2003.

With regard to the LA data set, the investigators reported that the fine particulate matter speciation of the LA samples is now complete. Analyses of the air exchange samples also are complete. Data analyses are now in progress. These will include multivariate analyses of activity patterns and home characteristics across seasons and locales. Contributions of indoor and outdoor toxics to personal air toxic exposures will be assessed for both winter and summer seasons for both cities. Time/activity patterns and home ventilation rates will be examined for their effects on these relationships. Source apportionment will be analyzed via studies of the source categories suggested in the subject-based exposure data. The LA report also will include analysis of the data set across the two cities. A draft final report for the LA data set also is anticipated in January 2003.

Future Activities:

The NUATRC has granted a no-cost extension for this study through July 2003, to complete the peer review of the reports and other formalities associated with the acceptance of these reports. Additional activities are to submit the LA draft final report and the NYC revised final report.
